Details of Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)
Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is the national mission of financial inclusion to ensure access to financial services, namely, savings accounts, base deposits, transfers, credit, insurance, and pensions. Under the scheme, a Basic Saving Bank Deposit (BSBD) account can be opened at any bank branch or commercial correspondent port (Mitra Bank), by people who do not have any other account.
His Excellency the Prime Minister announced that Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana is the National Mission for Financial Inclusion in his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2014, to ensure comprehensive financial inclusion of all families in the country by providing at least universal access to banking facilities. One basic bank account per household, financial literacy, and access to credit, insurance, and pension facilities.
Hereby, anyone who does not have a savings account can open an account without the need for any minimum balance, and if he declares that he does not have any of the officially valid documents required to open a savings account.
Moreover, to expand the range of banking services, more than 6 lakh villages in the country have been designated in 1.59 lakh Sub Service Areas (SSAs), with each sub-service area usually comprising 1,000 to 1,500 households, and a 1.26 lakh SSA that did not have a bank branch, Bank Mitras was hired for branchless banking.
Thus, PMJDY provides non-bank people easy access to banking services and awareness of financial products through financial literacy programs. Additionally, they receive a RuPay debit card, with inbuilt accident insurance coverage of Rs. 2 lakh, and access to an overdraft facility upon satisfactory operation of the account or credit history for six months.
Moreover, through the Prime Minister’s Social Security Schemes, launched by the Honorable Prime Minister on May 9, 2015, all eligible account holders can access through their bank accounts personal accident insurance coverage under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Life Insurance Coverage in Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, the minimum pension guaranteed for subscribers under Atal Pension Yojana.
PMJDY has been envisioned as a daring, innovative, and ambitious mission. The 2011 Census estimated that out of 24.67 crores of households in the country, 14.48 crores (58.7%) had access to banking services. In the first stage of the scheme, these households were targeted for inclusion through opening a bank account within a year of the scheme launch.
The actual achievement, as of 26 January 2015, was Rs 12.55 crore. As of 27.3.2019, the number of accounts has grown to 35.27 crores. Moreover, in 2011, there were only 0.33 lakh SSAs that had banking facilities and by providing Bank Mitras with 1.26 lakh branchless banking, banking services were expanded throughout the rural areas of India. The overarching aspect of this is evidenced by the fact that 20.90 crores (60%) of PMJDY accounts are in rural areas and 18.74 crores (over 53%) of PMJDY account holders are women.
