Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA)
2,564 Scheduled Castes students admitted in CBSE/State Boards affiliated 142 Private Residential Schools for academic session 2023-24
The Indian government has launched a similar initiative for all children nationwide, which continues to be part of the SHRESHTA 2024 scheme. This service will be of great benefit to all young people who are unable to complete their schoolwork. And those who cannot do so due to financial problems. The government’s excellent SHRESHTA program will be available only to those very bright children who cannot complete their education due to their lack of resources.
- School Selection: The best-performing private residential schools, which have a pass rate of over 75% in classes 10 and 12 over the last three years, are selected by an admission committee for selected students.
- Student Selection: About 3000 (1500 for 9th class and 1500 for provisional 11th class) SC students, whose parents’ annual income is up to 2.5 lahks, are selected every year under the program through a national-level examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). They will be offered options Schools are for students according to their merit.
- The management will charge the student’s total fees covering school fees (including tuition fees) and hostel fees (including mess fees). The fees accepted under the scheme per semester are Rs 1,00,000, Rs 1,10,000, Rs 1,25,000, and Rs 1,35,000 for classes IX to XII respectively.

Objective of SHRESHTA
The objective of the Scheme of Residential Education for Secondary School Students in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA) is as follows:
- Enhancing the reach of the government’s development initiative.
- Bridging the gap in the dominant areas of underserved Scheduled Castes in the education sector by collaborating with voluntary organizations.
- To provide an environment for socio-economic uplift and all-round development of the Scheduled Castes (SCs).
- To provide access to quality education to meritorious Scheduled Caste (SC) students so that they can explore future opportunities.
Eligibility Criteria for Schools
- The CBSE database was used to identify the best-performing private boarding schools, and these institutions were recommended by the district authorities in 2023-2024 under SHRESHTA.
- Schools must be operational for a minimum of five years and have sufficient facilities to accept another ten (10) SC students in classes 9 and 11.
- Schools covered under the scheme and sponsored under PM-AJAY/Samgra Shiksha Scheme/PM SHRI DoSEL schools will not be covered under this scheme. Examples of schools funded by the central government are NVS, EMRS (less than 10% of quota), KGBV, and state government. Schools, etc.
- Depending on the rules and conditions of the program, schools must agree to accept students under SHRESHTA.
Eligibility Criteria for Students
- Ninth-class (9th) applicants must be born on or before March 31, 2010, excluding April 1, 2006.
- Applicants for the 2011 batch must be born between April 1, 2004, and March 31, 2008.
- Under this course, applications are accepted only from students belonging to Scheduled Castes.
- Throughout the current academic year, the student must enroll in classes between the eighth and tenth.
- The total annual income of the parents should not exceed Rs. 2.5 lakh.

Expenditure under the Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA) from 2020-21 to 2023-24
- During 2020-21, BE was Rs.100.00 cr., expenditure was Rs. 56.05 cr. and no. of beneficiaries was 38,250.
- During 2021-22, BE was Rs.200.00 cr., expenditure was Rs. 38.05 cr. and no. of beneficiaries was 20,435.
- During 2022-23, BE was Rs.89.00 cr., expenditure was Rs. 51.12 cr. and no. of beneficiaries was 16,479.
- During 2023-24, BE is Rs.104.65.00 cr., expenditure is Rs. 51.57 cr. and no. of beneficiaries is 7,543 (as of 10.12.2023).
Under this scheme, a total of 2,564 students have been admitted into 142 private boarding schools affiliated with CBSE/state boards for the academic session 2023-24, and a school fee of Rs. Rs 30.55 crore has been paid by this department.

FAQs
To be admitted into the ninth (9th) class, a student must have passed the eighth (8th) class in the previous academic year. To be admitted into Class 11, a student must have passed Class 10 in the previous academic year. The annual income of the student’s parents must be up to ₹ 2.5 lakh.
The SHRESHTHA scheme was launched by the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment on June 3, 2022.
Under this scheme, around 3,000 SC students whose parents’ annual income is up to 2.5 lahks per annum are selected on their merit.
